The Superiority of the Dual Model (LCG + VGO)
The debate on the closure of Santiago is not a political issue, it is an imperative mathematical and logistical. The stagnant model of a single airport is unviable in Galicia due to the great geographical dispersion and the extreme demographic and industrial polarization in the north (Coruña) and the south (Vigo).
The Population Argument: 1 Million vs 100k
The central airport model ignores reality. Santiago has barely 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the million people that add the metropolitan environments of A Coruña and Vigo. The main companies and wealth centers in Galicia are at these extremes. A single airport cannot competitively connect with these cities to be considered "close." By closing Santiago, we would have two powerful airports, directly linked to where effective demand resides.
La Fuga: "Now we're ready to travel..."
There is a brutal drain of Galician passengers towards external infrastructures. For the citizen of A Coruña or Vigo, there is a psychological limit: If to take an international flight I have to travel 60 minutes by car to Santiago, I don't care about going directly to Porto, Asturias or going down to Madrid by AVE. By not having the offer at origin, the captive passenger is lost. Strengthening Coruña and Vigo blocks this escape.
The AVE annihilates Santiago's advantage
In Galicia, the national destination with the highest volume of passengers is Madrid. With the arrival of high speed, having the airport in the center of Galicia 45 minutes away makes it radically incompetitive compared to the AVE train option direct from A Coruña or Vigo stations. It takes a passenger less time to arrive in San Cristóbal than to travel by highway to Lavacolla. By eliminating Santiago, LCG and VGO would maintain duplicates of Madrid and Barcelona and would efficiently distribute the European hubs.
